New Zealand maintains a strong and transparent product compliance framework built around mandatory safety regulations, technical standards, and risk-based conformity assessment. The system is harmonized with Australia through Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Agreements (TTMRA) and aligned with international standards such as ISO, IEC, and Codex.
Key Authorities:
Standards New Zealand – Develops New Zealand Standards (NZS), many of which are aligned with AS/NZS (joint standards with Australia) or adopted from ISO/IEC.
Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) – Oversees product safety, electrical and building products, and market surveillance.
Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) – Regulates food safety, animal and plant products, and imported foods.
Medsafe (Ministry of Health) – Regulates pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and health supplements.
Radio Spectrum Management (RSM) – A division of MBIE responsible for telecom and RF equipment compliance and spectrum licensing.
New Zealand Customs Service – Verifies import compliance and documentation at ports of entry.
Key Compliance Elements:
Electrical & Product Safety:
High-risk products (e.g., mains-powered appliances, gas devices) must:
Be tested to AS/NZS standards
Be listed on the Electrical Equipment Safety System (EESS) or registered with WorkSafe
Some products require Supplier Declaration of Conformity (SDoC) or third-party certification.
Medsafe Product Registration:
Required for:
Medicines and vaccines
Medical devices (Class I–IV)
Health supplements
Registration includes:
Product dossier
GMP certificate
Labeling in English
Safety and efficacy data
Telecom Type Approval (RSM):
All RF and telecom devices must comply with New Zealand’s radio spectrum rules.
CE/FCC test reports are accepted, but suppliers must:
Register with RSM
Affix a supplier compliance label (RCM or C-tick)
Keep a compliance folder on file
Labeling Requirements:
Labels must be in English, and include:
Product name
Manufacturer/importer contact
Country of origin
Safety warnings and usage instructions
Expiry or batch number (for health products)
RCM/C-tick or energy rating label (if applicable)
Environmental & Energy Requirements:
New Zealand enforces:
Energy Rating Label scheme (jointly with Australia)
Voluntary and regulated take-back schemes for electronics and batteries
Chemical control programs aligned with international standards
Import Oversight:
Importers must submit:
Invoices, packing lists, and declaration of origin
Product registration or SDoC (if regulated)
Customs documentation and compliance certificates
Market Surveillance:
MBIE, MPI, and Medsafe conduct ongoing inspections, product recalls, and enforcement actions for unsafe or non-compliant goods.

Korea Revises Tablet PC & Battery Safety Standards
South Korea's KATS is revising two product safety standards under the Electrical Appliances and Consumer Products Safety Control Act. The screen-size criterion classifying a device as a tablet PC rises from 17 cm to 20 cm, ending misclassification of large phones like the Galaxy Ultra series. The self-inspection test for certified lithium battery cells also changes from overcurrent charging to a crush test, harmonizing with KC 62133-2. Public comments are open until July 10, 2026.
