Lesotho’s product compliance system is in development, with a focus on public health, basic consumer protection, and import quality control. As a member of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and SACU (Southern African Customs Union), Lesotho works toward regional harmonization of standards and often adopts or recognizes South African and international standards.
Key Authorities:
Ministry of Trade, Industry, Business Development and Tourism – Oversees trade regulations, import licensing, and standards policy.
Lesotho Standards Institution (LSI) – Under development; expected to become the national standards and conformity assessment body.
Ministry of Health – Regulates pharmaceuticals, food products, cosmetics, and medical devices, including registration and quality assurance.
Lesotho Communications Authority (LCA) – Regulates telecom and radio equipment, including frequency use and device approval.
