1. Burundi Bureau of Standards and Quality Control (BBN)
BBN is the national standards body responsible for developing, adopting, and enforcing national standards across various sectors. It provides services in standardization, quality assurance, certification, inspection, metrology, conformity assessment, and testing.
2. Agence de Régulation et de Contrôle des Télécommunications (ARCT)
ARCT regulates telecommunications in Burundi. It manages the type approval process for telecommunications and electronic equipment, ensuring compliance with national technical requirements.
3. Ministry of Environment, Agriculture and Livestock
This ministry formulates and implements agricultural and food safety policies, regulates the use of agricultural inputs such as fertilizers and pesticides, and promotes sustainable agricultural practices to enhance food security.
4. Ministry of Public Health and the Fight Against AIDS
This ministry sets and enforces food safety and hygiene regulations, monitors and inspects food establishments, and conducts public awareness campaigns on food safety and nutrition.
5. National Institute of Public Health (INSP)
INSP conducts research on foodborne diseases and health risks associated with food consumption, providing scientific data and recommendations to support food safety regulations.
Product Certification and Compliance Requirements
Pre-Shipment Verification of Conformity (PVoC) Program: Implemented by BBN, this program ensures that goods imported to Burundi conform to applicable local, regional, and/or international standards. Products must undergo conformity assessment by authorized bodies like SGS before shipment.
Certificate of Conformity (CoC): Issued upon successful assessment, the CoC certifies that a product complies with specified standards, regulations, or specifications. It includes details about the product, applicable standards, testing methods, manufacturer information, and validity period.
Type Approval for Telecommunications Equipment: ARCT requires type approval for telecommunications equipment, ensuring compliance with national technical requirements. The conformity requirements are aligned with those of the European Union.
Labeling and Marking Requirements: Products must adhere to specific labeling requirements, including information such as product name, manufacturer details, country of origin, storage instructions, net weight/volume, list of contents, nutritional information, production and expiration dates, and lot identification. Labels must be in French or Kirundi and not misleading to consumers.
