It oversees product standards, metrology, product development and testing, and product certification. The BNSI also manages laboratories for testing and calibration services.

The Compliance Unit serves as the supervisory body for Designated Non-Financial Businesses and Professionals (DNFBPs), including accountants, attorneys-at-law, real estate agents, and dealers in precious metals and stones. It administers relevant acts, supervises and regulates anti-money laundering and counter-financing of terrorism operations, establishes standards, and issues guidelines for the DNFBP sector.

The FTC is an independent government agency under the Ministry of Energy and Business Development. It is responsible for competition policy, trade practices, formulating fair trade policy and laws, and investigating activities restricting competition, such as monopolies and unfair trade practices. The FTC also determines principles, rates, and standards of service for regulated service providers.

4. CARICOM Regional Organisation for Standards and Quality (CROSQ)

Headquartered in Bridgetown, Barbados, CROSQ is a regional standards body for the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). It promotes the development and harmonization of standards, metrology, technical regulations, and conformity assessment procedures to facilitate trade and support the establishment of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy.

Product Certification and Compliance Requirements

  • Product Certification: The BNSI offers product certification services to ensure that products meet specific standards. Interested parties must submit an application and pay a non-refundable fee. The BNSI conducts preliminary inspections and tests samples to assess conformity to standards.

  • Labeling and Marking Requirements: The BNSI publishes labeling and marking requirements in its standards regulations. Products must comply with these requirements, and inquiries for specific classes of goods can be directed to the BNSI.

  • Conformity Assessment: Conformity assessment involves determining whether products, services, systems, or personnel meet the specifications of relevant standards. This can include testing, inspection, certification, and accreditation activities.

  • Type Approval for Telecommunications Equipment: For telecommunications equipment, type approval certificates are required. European (EU) standards or American (FCC) standards are necessary for the certification process.
