1. Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI)
BSTI is the national standards body responsible for formulating and adopting Bangladesh Standards (BDS) for products and services. It conducts testing, certification, and surveillance to ensure compliance with these standards. BSTI also issues Certification Marks (CM) licenses for products that meet the required standards.
2. Bangladesh Accreditation Board (BAB)
BAB is the national accreditation authority that accredits laboratories, certification bodies, and inspection agencies. It ensures that conformity assessment bodies operate competently and consistently.
3. Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE)
DIFE is responsible for ensuring occupational safety and health in factories and establishments. It conducts inspections and enforces labor laws to promote
safe working conditions.
4. Directorate General of Drug Administration (DGDA)
DGDA regulates the import, manufacture, and distribution of drugs and medical devices. It ensures that pharmaceutical products meet safety, efficacy, and quality standards.
5. Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC)
BTRC oversees the compliance of telecommunications equipment and services with national standards and regulations. It ensures the proper functioning and safety of telecom devices.
Product Certification and Compliance Requirements
Mandatory Certification: BSTI has expanded its list of products requiring mandatory certification. As of late 2023, an additional 36 products, including sweets, jute bags, pressure cookers, LPG gas cylinders, and microwave ovens, require BSTI certification.
Conformity Assessment: Products must undergo testing and inspection to verify compliance with applicable standards. This process is essential for obtaining the necessary certification marks and for customs clearance.
Surveillance and Enforcement: BSTI conducts regular surveillance and market inspections to ensure ongoing compliance of certified products. Non-compliant products may face penalties, including fines and removal from the market.
