1. Bahamas Bureau of Standards and Quality (BBSQ)

The BBSQ is the national standards body responsible for developing and implementing standards for goods, services, practices, and processes used or produced locally. It administers the Processed Foods, Weights, and Measures Acts, affecting all products entering The Bahamas. The BBSQ collaborates with other ministries on quality standards, such as sanitary and phytosanitary standards with the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources and the Bahamas Health and Food Safety Agency (BAHFSA).

2. Bahamas Customs Department

The Customs Department ensures that imported goods comply with national regulations, including proper labeling in English and adherence to local standards. It plays a crucial role in enforcing product compliance at the borders.

3. Ministry of Health & Wellness

This ministry oversees public health and safety, including the regulation of pharmaceuticals and medical devices. It ensures that health-related products meet safety and efficacy standards before they can be supplied in The Bahamas.

4. Ministry of Agriculture & Marine Resources

This ministry is responsible for the sanitary and phytosanitary control of food and agricultural products. It collaborates with the BBSQ and BAHFSA to implement food safety regulations and standards.

5. Compliance Commission of The Bahamas

The Compliance Commission is an independent statutory authority established under the Financial Transactions Reporting Act. It ensures that financial institutions within its remit comply with anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing regulations.

Product Certification and Compliance Requirements

  • Standards and Labeling: Importers and distributors must ensure that goods sold in The Bahamas are properly labeled in English and comply with local labeling standards. Products that satisfy the Caribbean Regional Organization for Standards and Quality (CROSQ) or have U.S. accreditation are generally accepted, as the BBSQ has limited capacity to test or accredit findings.

  • Conformity Assessment: While The Bahamas has limited local testing facilities, it recognizes certifications from accredited international bodies. The government proposes that any future system ensures the competence of certification programs will be conducted in accordance with regional and/or international standards.

  • Publication of Technical Regulations: National regulations and standards are published in the Official Gazette of The Bahamas, providing official information on laws and announcements.
