For most manufacturers, MIL-STD-461H does not require a product redesign. Instead, the impact is primarily procedural and documentary. The practical implications include:


  • More rigorous test planning: The EMI Test Plan (EMITP) must define operating modes, harness configurations, grounding, bonding, and tailoring more explicitly before arrival at the laboratory.

  • Installation-representative setups: Test configurations must faithfully represent the equipment's intended final installation — generic cable lengths are no longer sufficient justification.

  • Reduced ambiguity = less tailoring flexibility: Revision H is described in less permissive terms, encouraging stronger upfront engineering decisions.

  • Documentation burden increases: New documentation requirements (e.g., RE101 falloff distance) must be incorporated into test reports.

  • Program continuity: Many ongoing DoD programs will continue using the revision specified in their contract (often F or G) until completion. New programs and contract modifications should reference Revision H.
