South Korea EMC Regulation Update for Platform Screen Door Sensors

South Korea has introduced an important Korea EMC regulation update affecting platform screen door (PSD) sensor systems used in rail and metro infrastructure. The new requirements aim to ensure that sensors used in PSD systems remain reliable in environments where high-frequency wireless technologies such as 5G are present.

The amendment was issued by the National Radio Research Agency (RRA) under Notification No. 2025-22 on December 31, 2025, and focuses on strengthening electromagnetic immunity standards for laser and LiDAR sensors used in PSD systems.

The Korea EMC regulation update introduces new electromagnetic immunity requirements to address interference caused by broadband radio signals, particularly from 5G communications.

Two key regulatory changes were introduced:


1. Addition of Broadband RF Immunity Requirements


The amendment adds a “broadband radiated RF electromagnetic field” resistance standard to the body port resistance requirements in the EMC standard for multimedia devices (Appendix 12).

These new tests are specifically designed for laser or LiDAR sensors used in platform screen doors to ensure they maintain reliable operation when exposed to broadband wireless signals.

Key test parameters include:


  • Frequency range: 3400–3700 MHz

  • Signal type: 5G TM1.1 modulated signal (100 MHz)

  • Field strength levels:

    • 20 V/m

    • 28 V/m

    • 38 V/m

    • 56 V/m

    • 80 V/m


Manufacturers must select one of the five defined test conditions when conducting EMC testing.

Testing procedures will align with the national standard KS C IEC 61000-4-41, once it is formally adopted.

Why the EMC Standard Needed Updating


The revision was prompted by reported damage and operational issues in platform screen doors caused by interference from broadband 5G signals.

  • Notice on Conformity Assessment of Broadcasting and Communications Equipment

  • Notice on the Designation and Management of Testing Agencies for Broadcasting and Communications Equipment

These updates support the implementation of the revised EMC testing requirements.


Implementation Timeline


Although the regulation was announced on December 31, 2025, it will not take effect immediately.

The Korean government has provided a six-month transition period to allow manufacturers, certification bodies, and testing laboratories to prepare for the new requirements.

Effective date: July 1, 2026

During the transition period, products may still comply with the previous EMC standards. After that date, the new requirements will become mandatory.
